TT Cinema: Jackie Brown Screening w/ Plantation Rum

November 26th

We’re rounding off our November screening schedule, and our two-week collaboration with Plantation Rum, with a screening of Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded 1997 American crime drama, Jackie Brown.

The film holds the not-inconsiderable accolade of being the only Tarantino production that didn’t come from the iconic director’s vast imagination. Instead, it was adapted from Elmore Leonard’s 1992 novel Rum Punch which Tarantino himself confessed he ‘fell in love’ with (the book, not the drink.. we think).

When flight attendant Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) is busted smuggling money for her arms dealer boss, Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and detective Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) want her help to bring down Robbie.

Facing jail time for her silence or death for her cooperation, Brown decides instead to double-cross both parties and make off with the smuggled money. Meanwhile, she enlists the help of bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster), a man whose love for her knows no bounds.

Tarantino actually changed very little in terms of the structure of the original text, such was his veneration for it, apart from changing the location from Miami to LA, and – perhaps most significantly – the ethnicity of the titular character from white to black. As a result, the film deftly satirises – and pays homage to – 1970s blaxploitation films, particularly the films Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974), both of which – neatly – also starred Grier in the title roles.

Jackie Brown picked up plenty of plaudits upon release for its (mostly) accurate portrayal of the original source material, characteristically slick art direction, witty dialogue, and multiple standout performances. Indeed, it went on to be nominated for several awards – including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor – and is single-handedly credited with reigniting the career of the two leads, Robert Forster and Pam Grier.

It’s one hell of a ride. So come in from the cold and warm those cockles with some Plantation Rum cocktails in hand. There’ll also be plenty of  free snacks throughout as TT Cinema tradition dictates.

Tickets are £15 for one, or £20 for a pair when you use the code ‘rumpunch’ at checkout.
