It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it; John Carpenter’s Halloween, which was released 41 years ago this very day, will always be required viewing for the holiday for which it’s named.
TT Cinema: Halloween Screening
31st October
What better way to mark All Hallows Eve than with a screening of John Carpenter’s seminal slasher film, featuring a break though performance from a young Jamie Lee Curtis.
The plot kicks off with a six-year-old Michael Myers, who is confined to an insane asylum after stabbing his teenage sister to death on Halloween night 1963.
Exactly fifteen years later Michael escapes, returning to his home town of Haddonfield with psychiatrist Doctor Loomis (Donald Pleasence) in hot pursuit. Bookish babysitter Laurie Strode Curtis), all alone in the house on Halloween night, soon discovers that she is Michael’s next target.
Halloween grossed $47 million at the box office in the United States and $23 million internationally for a total of $70 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable independent films of all time.
This highly influential modern horror/suspense film also set the trend for two decades of re-makes and sequels, and is credited in some quarters of the critical community to have set the blueprint for the ‘modern slasher’ film.
