TT Cinema: Gremlins Screening
Our series of unconventional Christmas cult-classics continues (try saying that three times fast) with a screening of Stephen Spielberg, Joe Dante & Chris Columbus’ surreal comedy-horror, Gremlins.
The film is set in a Norman Rockwell-esque small town at Christmastime. Seeking a unique gift for his son, an erstwhile inventor (Hoyt Axton) purchases a cute, fuzzy little “Mogwai” from a Chinatown shopkeeper’s grandson (John Louie) who issues a series of dire warnings before closing the deal, which – predictably – are soon forgotten.
Meanwhile, young bank clerk Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) must suffer such antagonists as the venomous Mrs. Deagle and priggish Gerald (Judge Reinhold) while pursuing his romance with Kate (Phoebe Cates).
These and a variety of other plot strands are tied together when the lovable mogwai (named Gizmo) is exposed to bright light and gotten wet. In short order, the town is invaded by grotesque predatory Gremlins, who lay waste to everything in sight as Billy and Kate try to contain the destruction.
Like most of Joe Dante’s works, Gremlins is chock-full of significant cameo appearances: in this instance, such pop-culture icons as Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, Chuck Jones, Scott Brady, Harry Carey Jr., Steven Spielberg (the film’s executive producer) and even Robby the Robot all show up briefly on screen.
The film was a resounding box office and critical success upon a release, and since then has gone on to inspire toy ranges, multiple sequels, video games, and even essays arguing against the excesses of consumer culture.
Despite all this, whether you choose to see it as a scathing critique on consumerism or simply a special effects-heavy popcorn flick, Gremlins is a minor classic. So come in from the cold and warm those cockles as we get stuck into the weirdest Christmas cult-classic around. There’ll be complimentary cocktails, and free snacks throughout as TT Cinema tradition dictates.
