TT Cinema: Forrest Gump 25th Anniversary Screening
Come 8th October we’re celebrating the 25th birthday of a film pretty much every single one of us will have heard of at some point or another – Robert Zemeckis’ seminal comedic drama, Forrest Gump.
Loosely based off Winston Groom’s 1986 novel, and starring Tom Hanks in the eponymous title role, the story depicts several decades across the life of one Forrest Gump, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama.
Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events in the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis to dance, becomes a star footballer, meets JFK, serves with honour in Vietnam, sparks an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, opens a profitable shrimping business and much, much more.
Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon.
The film smashed several box office records upon its release in 1994, and was a resounding success with the critical community. It won six Academy Awards – making it one of the most successful films in the history of the Oscars – and many more besides.
It’s sweetness and charm, augmented by a stellar performance by Hanks and his talented supporting cast, lend the film a charming depth and grace, and there are usually no dry eyes left in the house when the credits roll by – no matter how many times you’ve watched it.
