New Renaissance Film Festival: Dream State Screening

21st August

We’re pleased to be hosting the London New Renaissance Film Festival this summer, bringing you two UK premieres from some of the hottest up-and-comers in the industry.

The festival was designed to provide a platform for outstanding independent filmmakers from around the world, with a distinct focus on the artist, the story, and on building an international community of inspiring storytellers. For that inspiring mission statement, we’re pretty proud to be aligning ourselves with them this year.

The first screening will be Natsværmer (Dream State, but directly translates to “Moth”) the feature film debut by self-taught, exciting, 21-year old Danish director, Asger K. Bartels.

This self-financed drama explores the complexities of millennial coming-of-age through the eyes and lens of Louis (Karim Theilgaard). Following the death of his estranged father, photographer Louis is left feeling he hasn’t achieved quite as much in life as he had first hoped.

Despite spending years chasing the same dream of becoming a professional photographer, he finds himself stuck working on the same project for years. His girlfriend Rosa (Kimmie Falstrøm) tries to snap Louis out of his slump and get him to grow up, but when old acquaintances make a reappearance, the night draws Louis back in.

Vividly shot and beautifully acted, this is a truly impressive first outing by Bartels. It was premiered last year at Denmark’s largest feature film festival, CPH:PIX, to critical acclaim, and it even scooped the “Best Danish Film” award at the Annual Copenhagen Film Festival this year.

Big things to come from Bartels. Come down and see what all the fuss is about.

Arrival – Attendees will arrive through the doors of our liquor store at 8pm to allow time for them to settle in and purchase any beer, wine, or other refreshments they like. "The film exudes talent. The night scenes in particular are beautifully redeemed. When Louis jumps over railings and runs from security guards, Morten Vilhelm delivers neon-beautiful night scenes, while David Nørlund Wiberg provides a delicious synth score that dominates the soundscape." - Ekkofilm.DK
