TT Cinema: The Blair Witch Project 20th Anniversary Screening
Twenty years after Heather, Joshua and Michael disappeared on the trail of the fabled Blair Witch, we’re heading back into the woods for a very special celebratory screening.
Two decades ago, when the internet was in its infancy, the world was held captive by this ‘real-life’ documentary style film which projected the ‘found-footage’ sub-genre into the horror-sphere.
The plot relays the fictional story of three student filmmakers who hike in the Black Hills near Burkitsville in 1994 to film a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch. The three disappear – never to be seen again – but their equipment and footage is discovered a year later. The purportedly ‘recovered footage’ is what the viewer sees.
Combining Hi-8 video with black-and-white 16 mm film, this film presents a raw and – at the time – revolutionary take on what a horror film can be. The fact that we never see our titular villain only adds to its unique suspense – thus proving that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen.
Whilst the film was made for only $60,000, it made $1.5m in its US opening weekend and has gone on to gross nearly $250m world-wide – making it one of the most successful independent films of all time.
The film is also heavily credited with popularizing the found-footage technique, which was later used by similarly successful horror films such as Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield, and is therefore rightly considered a bona-fide cult-classic of the genre.
