One of the few remaining distilleries in Campbeltown, Springbank has been owned and operated by the Reid family since it first opened its doors in 1828. The 10-year-old is their youngest whisky in the range of age-statements the distillery produces. Distilled two and a half times before being aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this whisky won the top prize in its class at the 2014 World Whiskies Awards.
Appearance: Light bronze.
Nose: Tropical fruit, light smoke and malt notes.
Taste: Salted caramel, pears and vanilla.
Finish: Spicy cinnamon and pepper, brine and peat.
Overall: A wee ripper of a young dram that wakes up the senses.
Excellent choice for anyone who enjoys in Island Scotch. Everyone should try a Campbeltown whisky at some stage in their life, and there’s probably no better place to start than with the Springbank 10.
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Springbank 10 you could also try Arran 10, Talisker 10 or Old Pulteney 12.
Springbank is the only Scottish distillery to control every step of the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling. Also known for a partial distillation technique, retaining the tails of the first distillation, distilling it again in an intermediate still that uses a wormwood condenser. This goes back into the fients receiver with the heads and tails of the spirit distillation.
