Don Q Añejo is a blend of rum aged between 3 and 8 years in American white oak. It is a blend of light multi-column still rum and heavy single copper column (Vendome) still. Considered to be a medium-bodied rum, and a true example of classic Spanish style rum.
Appearance: Deep caramel.
Nose: Vanilla and caramel aromas followed by molasses, soft tobacco and leather.
Taste: Dry wood vanilla, and followed by a pineapple mid palette.
Finish: Peppery and sweet with a lingering note of dry caramel.
Overall: Complex Spanish style rum.
Don Q Añejo is a great Spanish style rum, perfect for those rum drinkers that prefer a drier style rum. Try it in classic Cuban style cocktails such as an El Presidente or a Hotel Nacional.
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of Don Q Añejo, you could also try La Hechicera, Mount Gay XO or El Dorado 8 Year.
Rum is a spirit made exclusively by fermenting sugarcane or its bi-products, these being molasses and sugarcane juice. There are no real rules when it comes to rum production making it a very large and varied category. The process of making this spirit is a combination of fermentation and distillation.
ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Destileria Serralles was founded in 1865 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The Serrallés family produced sugar there under the name of Snow White until 1994. Don Q was created in 1934 and has been the leading rum on the island ever since. Destileria Serrallés is the cleanest and greenest in the Caribbean. The distillery produces its own electricity and bio-fuel (among other things), by simply taking care of their waste products. They use a 1934 Vendome single copper column still and a more modern 5 column multi still. A provision in The Treaty of Paris of 1898 grants the Serrallés family exclusive rights to the Río Inabón. This is a river that winds through Puerto Rico’s volcanic mountains and is the exclusive water source used to produce Don Q rum.
ABOUT THE LIQUID
Don Q Añejo is rich, woody and elegant, light and dry with no sugar added post-distillation.
