Description

FULL DESCRIPTION
Derrumbes is a collection of mezcals that take us on a journey through the mezcal denomination of origin. Mezcal is made throughout Mexico, with every region offering its unique style. Each expression of Derrumbes was chosen to highlight these traditions, terroir, and agave. Derrumbes Zacatecas is made with 100% blue agave in Huitzila, Zacatecas. Neighbouring the Tequila Valley, Huitzila is known mostly for their mezcals that are made in a similar style. This expression of Derrumbes is a rare opportunity to travel back in time to experience a more ancient expression of a Blue Agave spirit.

TASTING NOTES
Appearance: Crystal clear.
Nose: Earthy vegetal notes with deep smoke.
Taste: Mouth coating agave sweetness with hints of violet.
Finish: Charred pineapple with earthy undertones.
Overall: Obvious blue agave notes in a completely foreign context, delightful.

Gift

This is a really fun drop, bringing back fond memories of both drinking in Tequila and Oaxaca. Kill two birds with one stone and get a bottle of this if you’re struggling to decide between Tequila or mezcal.

RECOMMENDATIONS
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Derrumbes Zacatecas you could also try, Fortaleza Blanco, Ocho Blanco or Ilegal Joven.

Connoisseur

The literal translation of mezcal is ‘oven-cooked agave’, the only real difference between mezcal and Tequila is that mezcal is not regulated to the 5 states, like Tequila is. It is predominantly made in the southern state of Oaxaca and unlike Tequila it can be made from any type of agave plant native to Mexico, but not blue. It is categorized from blanco, through to extra añejo in the same way Tequila is and has grown massively in popularity recently. The production and ageing, all the way through to the bottling is generally the same as Tequila.

DISTILLERY
Hacienda Guadalupe, Zacatecas

ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
With identical climate and weather conditions to Jalisco, maestro mezcalero Jaime Bañuelos cooks his agaves in a roasting pit, then crushes them with a traditional tahona, ferments naturally with wild yeast, and distils in small copper pot stills.

INGREDIENTS
Blue Agave.
