We think there’s no better way to make mezcal sing than in a stripped-back mezcal margarita.

Mezcal’s best friend is lime juice; the sharp tang of the fruit beautifully balances the warm, earthy depth and honey-sweetness of the mezcal.

Here is a recipe for a classic mezcal marg, as well as a few twists for you to try out.

Ingredients

50ml Koch Mezcal Ensamble

25ml Lime Juice

15-20ml Syrup of your choice

Garnish of your choice

Salt for rim (optional)

Method

Classic Mezcal Margarita:

Add all ingredients, including agave syrup, to a shaker or Boston glass, fill with cubed ice and seal.

Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.

(optional) Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass to rim with salt.

Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice OR a chilled Martini glass/coupette.

Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

Serve and enjoy.

Time for Your Twist:

Cinnamon Margarita:

  1. In the shaker, along with your mezcal and lime, add 20ml of cinnamon syrup instead of agave.
  2. Shake with ice and strain over cubed ice.
  3. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and serve.

Chilli Margarita:

  1. In the shaker, along with your mezcal and lime, add 20ml of chilli syrup instead of agave.
  2. Shake with ice and strain over cubed ice.
  3. Garnish with a chilli and serve.

Blood Orange Margarita:

  1. In the shaker, along with your mezcal and lime, add 20ml of blood orange syrup instead of agave.
  2. Shake with ice and strain over cubed ice.
  3. Garnish with a wedge of blood orange and serve.
History

Mezcal is a spirit that has seen a swift and sustained rise to popularity in recent years. The older, stronger, more traditional big brother to tequila, this agave-based spirit varies hugely in flavour and strength from brand to brand but is always guaranteed to pack a punch in both departments.

We think there’s no better way to make mezcal sing than in a stripped-back mezcal margarita. Mezcal’s best friend is lime juice, the sharp tang of the fruit, beautifully balances the warm, earthy depth and honey-sweetness of the mezcal and the drink is completed with a squeeze of agave syrup, a natural sweetener derived from the same plant as the spirit itself.

To cover this gorgeous mixture in too many additives or fruit flavours would serve only to hide the distinct and moreish flavour of the mezcal, but that’s not to say that this simple recipe can’t be played with; by swapping the agave for a flavoured syrup, either bought, or better still, handmade, we can add an extra element of sensation to this already fabulous cocktail.
