Method

Take your Boston Glass or small tin and, using your jigger to measure, add the gin and sugar syrup to the shaker.

Using your Mexican elbow and your jigger to measure, squeeze 25ml of lemon juice and add it to the shaker.

Strip 5-10 basil leaves from their stems and add them to the shaker.

Fill your highball glass with cubed ice and, using your Hawthorne strainer and your fine strainer, double strain your cocktail into the glass.

Top with soda water and garnish with a lemon wedge and a basil leaf.

Serve and enjoy!

History

This cocktail is a refreshing twist on a very popular old cocktail known simply as a gin fizz, the fizz is the best known member of the fizz family, consisting of gin, lemon, sugar syrup and soda water.

Bartender and owner of Le Lion De Paris, Jörg Meyer created a riff on this drink, without the soda, in 2008. He named his basil-gin-smash ‘Gin Pesto’ and it went on to win “Best New Cocktail” at the 2008 Tales Of The Cocktail Spirited Awards.
