TT Cinema: Trading Places Screening
December 2 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
It’s December and that means it’s high time to deck the halls and dust off those Christmas classics, starting with this quintessentially ’80s offering from the legendary John Landlis.
Inspired by the ‘nature-nurture’ theory that motivated so many Three Stooges comedies, Trading Places tells the story of an upper-class commodities broker (Dan Aykroyd) and a homeless street hustler (Eddie Murphy) whose lives cross paths when they are unknowingly made part of an elaborate bet.
The bet in question is one made between two fabulously wealthy but morally bankrupt brothers over heredity vs environment – arranging for the impoverished Billy Ray (Murphy) to be placed in the lap of luxury and trained for a cushy career, whilst simultaneously setting out to reduce aristocratic yuppie Louis Winthorpe III (Aykroyd) to poverty and disgrace.
However, when Billy Ray figures out that the brothers intend to dump him once their experiment is complete, he seeks out Winthorpe and together the pauper-turned-prince and prince-turned-pauper plot an uproarious revenge.
This heart-warming, morally-satisfying satire of distinctly American excess and social standing was a smash-hit upon its release in 1983, remaining in the top 10 grossing films for over four months post-premiere. It’s gone on to attain cult-like status in Christmas film circles – most notably for it’s unforgettable ‘down and out Santa’ scene, which has inspired many a gif in the internet age.
So come in from the cold and warm those cockles as we get stuck into a proper Christmas cult-classic. There’ll be complimentary cocktails, and free snacks throughout as TT Cinema tradition dictates.
