TT Cinema: Spirited Away Screening
April 9 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
Join us in our cinema as we team up with the crew at Isle of Harris Gin to stick on one of our all-time favourite films, Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning 2001 masterpiece – Spirited Away.
Hayao Miyazaki’s animated feature plunks a frightened, confused pre-adolescent girl, Chihiro, into a phantasmagoric netherworld in a quest to be reunited with her parents. Crammed to bursting point with indelibly grotesque characters, the film has few rivals as a work of visual imagination.
Spirited Away also smashed multiple records. After being theatrically released in Japan it became the most successful film in Japanese history, grossing over $331 million worldwide. It also became the first film to gross over $200 million before it had even made it to US theatres. It was the first foreign-language animation to win an Oscar, and no animated film has come close to its success since (no, not even Frozen).
Among the many things that has helped the film maintain its legacy is the sheer attention to detail. A product of painstakingly hand drawn animation, the result is stunningly beautiful.
Every frame showcases a lovingly-rendered detail, whether that’s a piece of pottery or a food stall that has been created specifically for this world. The ginormous bath tubs, the ghost train that seemingly glides across the water, and the flowers Chihiro traverses through to visit her parents are all images that remain with you far after the film ends.
No more reasons needed to come on down to TT Cinema, then. But if for whatever reason all that isn’t enough, our expert bar team will have your liquid refreshments covered and there will be free popcorn provided throughout courtesy of the guys over at PROPERCORN.
In the nautical, sea-faring spirit of all things Spirited Away, the foundation of our bar serves on the evening will be Isle of Harris’ award-winning gin, which uniquely uses hand-harvested sugar kelp as one of its botanicals.
Tickets are £15 for the one, or £20 for a pair when using the code ‘yubaba’ at checkout. Complimentary Isle of Harris cocktail included as tradition dictates.
