TT Cinema: City of God Screening
May 7 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
The first screening of May looks set to be a corker, as we put on Fernando Meirelles’ sweeping, Oscar-nominated tale of crime, poverty, and love in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro – City of God.
Though the narrative skips around in time, the main focus is on Cabeleira who formed a gang called the Tender Trio. He and his best friend, Bené, become crime lords over the course of a decade.
When Bené is killed before he can retire, Lil’ Zé attempts to take out his arch enemy, Sandro Cenoura. But Sandro and a young gangster named Mane form an alliance and begin a gang war with Lil’ Zé. Meanwhile, amateur photographer Buscape documents the brutal crime war, making their story famous.
Upon it’s release in 2002, City of God was met with near-universal critical acclaim and swept up numerous awards. It also left a profound legacy on Brazil, and the image of the favela.
It inspired a spike in production shootings, with over 45 being done in 2002 alone, increasing awareness of the more poverty-stricken areas of Rio, placing it firmly in the public eye to the extent that it became the basis of debates in the Brazilian Parliament. There was even a follow-up documentary charting the journey of the young cast in the years following the film.
Thought-provoking and entertaining in equal measure, City of God is a must-see in most film fans’ books. As always we’ll sort the liquid refreshments and there’ll be free popcorn provided by the good people at PROPERCORN.
Tickets are £15 for the one, or £20 for a pair when using the code ‘deus’ at checkout. Complimentary cocktail included as tradition dictates.
