Genius Month: The Talented Mr. Ripley Screening
February 4 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
We’re capping off our month of lauding those who think firmly outside the box with a screening of one of our unashamed all-time favourites, the late Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Based off Patricia Highsmith’s highly successful 1955 crime novel of the same name, the plot follows an ingenious and unsettling sociopath Tom Ripley, played masterfully by Matt Damon, who makes his way in mid-’50s New York City as a men’s room attendant and sometimes pianist, though his real skill is in impersonating other people, forging handwriting, and running second-rate scams.
After being mistaken for a Princeton student, Tom meets the shipping tycoon father of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), who has traveled to the coast of Italy, where he’s living a carefree life with his father’s money and his beautiful girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Dickie’s father will pay Ripley 1,000 dollars plus his expenses if he can persuade Dickie to return to America.
As Ripley and Dickie become friends, Tom finds himself both attracted to Dickie and envious of his life of pleasure. In time, he decides that he would much rather be Dickie Greenleaf than Tom Ripley, and his dark, manipulative genius really comes into play. As does the genius inherent in Highsmith’s original plot.
The film was widely praised upon its release for its slick artistic direction, faithfulness to the notoriously tricky original text, and spell-binding lead performances, scooping five Academy Award nominations and picking up a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role courtesy of Jude Law.
The Talented Mr. Ripley is a suspense thriller that lingers, and poses its audience tough ethical questions about the power of intellect and imitation. We’re looking forward to it nearly as much as you are.
