TT Cinema: The Matrix 20th Anniversary Screening
June 11 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
Come June 11th, it’ll have officially been two decades since the world first experienced bullet-time. Feel old? Don’t worry, us too.
So we thought there’d be no better way to forget this creeping, unnerving reality for an hour or two than with a screening of this all-time metaphysical fantasy classic.
If you’re new to the trilogy, the plot of the first – and, in many fans’ books, the best – instalment runs roughly thus:
The film follows mild-mannered computer jockey and part-time hacker, Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), in a dystopian 1999 American city. Through the latter activity, he makes the acquaintance of a mysterious man named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who reveals that nothing around him is as it seems.
What follows is Thomas’ (alias ‘Neo’) struggle to discover the truth of the world around him, and break free of its illusory confines, battling various agents and other foes along the way.
The Matrix set a new benchmark for the sci-fi genre, scooping up a startling four Academy Awards for its sound and video editing, and spawned two sequels as well as an animated spinoff. Despite these also receiving plaudits of their own, it is hard to look past the 1999 offering in terms of the top dog.
Its distinct cinematographic style is another aspect of the The Matrix that has become iconic, permeating everything from other Hollywood hits, through to stage performance, to video game camera work.
Tastebuds will also be well catered for, with out dedicated bar team creating a bespoke cocktail for you to get acquainted with while you sit back and enjoy. Oh, and there’ll be free popcorn courtesy of the good people at PROPERCORN to satisfy those snack seekers among us.
Tickets are £15 for the one, or £20 for a pair when using the code ‘neo’ at checkout. Complimentary cocktail included as tradition dictates.
