The Beach Screening w/ Gosling’s Rum
March 26 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
At the end of March, we’re collaborating with the guys over at Gosling’s Rum to put on a screening of the turn-of-the-millenium cult hit, The Beach.
Directed by Danny Boyle, and adapted from a 1996 Alex Garland novel of the same name, the film follows Richard (Leonardo Di Caprio), an American backpacker, on his travels through Asia with a handful of friends from Europe.
While in Bangkok, he meets a mad Scotsman who calls himself Daffy Duck (Robert Carlyle). Shortly before Mr. Duck kills himself, he gives Richard a crude map to a place in Thailand that he claims is paradise on earth: beautiful, unspoiled, and uninhabited.
For lack of anything better to do, Richard and his companions try to locate the spot, which, after a dangerous and taxing journey, takes them to a beach as beautiful as Duck said it would be. Richard and his friends settle in, but before long they discover that they are not alone.
This film split critics right down the middle upon it’s release and, like all good cult hits, was the centre of some controversy too – with production delays, shifting release dates, and environmental concerns all hitting the headlines in the months leading up to its release.
Since then, though, The Beach has built up a loyal cult following thanks to its quirky characters, unconventional plot lines, deleted scenes, and beautiful cinematography which still stands up to this very day. Plus, after all, who doesn’t like a bit of unorthodoxy from time to time?
Providing the refreshments, meanwhile, are the very people you’d like to be washed up on a beach with – the crew from Gosling’s Rum – whose liquid we will be featuring heavily in our complimentary guest serve for the evening.
Tickets are £15 for the one, or £20 for a pair when using the code ‘thebeach’ at checkout. Complimentary Gosling’s Rum cocktail included as tradition dictates.
