Genius Month: Walk The Line Screening
February 3 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm£15
The penultimate screening of Genius Month takes our guests on a journey through the troubled and tumultuous life of one of Country Music – and, well, music generally’s – greatest ever exponents, Johnny Cash.
Walk the Line, directed by James Mangold and starring Joaqim Phoenix as Cash, follows the early years in the career of the American music legend.
The young Cash sets out on life’s journey battered by his brother’s accidental death and an abusive father, who blames him for the incident. His rise to fame with such hits as “A Boy Named Sue” and “Ring of Fire” is countered by his struggle with amphetamines, barbiturates and alcohol.
His instability, both financial and emotional, leads to the failure of his first marriage. The few comforts of his unhappy youth had come from the radio programs of June Carter (played to perfection by Reese Witherspoon), the luminous daughter of country music’s first family. When their paths cross, it’s her devotion and support that becomes his salvation.
Upon its release in 2005, Walk the Line was received with universal critical acclaim, praised for its committed cast, spot-on lead performances, and predictably pitch-perfect soundtrack, and picking up five Academy Award nominations, and one victory in the Best Actress category (courtesy of Reese Witherspoon).
In short, Walk The Line captures the emotional subtleties of the genius of Johnny Cash with a freshness that is a pleasure to watch.
