Genius Month: Matilda Screening
January 21 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm£15
Our month of the mastermind appreciation continues on into January with Danny DeVito’s big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic heartwarming tale, Matilda.
The plot follows a precocious and highly-intelligent young girl, Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), as she attempts to make her way in the world despite the neglect she suffers at the hands of her ignorant, cruel and decidedly low-brow father (DeVito), mother (real-life wife, Rhea Pearlman) and older brother.
As she grows older, she realises that her abilities extend far beyond the above-average and into the realms of the extraordinary – moving objects seemingly with the use of her mind alone.
Not until her teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davitz) shows her kindness for the first time does she realise that she can use her telekenetic powers to do something about her suffering, and help her friends along the way.
It’s not long until our pantomime villains, from the awful Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) – headmistress of her miserable school Crunchem Hall – her parents, and older brother, begin to feel her ire in this thoroughly enjoyable tale of poetic justice.
